Governor McDonnell has made his last state spending proposal to Virginia lawmakers. McDonnell met this morning with the General Assembly’s two money committees. He wants to triple the state rainy day fund. The governor already has said he wants to add millions for education, mental health, water quality, public safety, prisoner re-entry, and foster care. Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe says he likes many items in the budget. McAuliffe says reforming the state mental health system should be a critical priority, as well as strengthening the Virginia Retirement System.
