Former Deputy Court Clerk Faces Embezzlement Charge

A former employee of the Albemarle County Clerk of Circuit Court has been arrested on an embezzlement charge. Dayna T. Awkard was once the deputy clerk of the court and she spent 24 years in that office. Awkard is accused of pocketing nearly $14,000 in cash over a four-year period. Her former boss, Clerk of Circuit Court Debra Shipp, says she was heartbroken when she learned that Awkard had been charged. Shipp says she and Awkard were close. She notes her former employee has already paid $5,000 in restitution. If convicted, Awkard faces up to 20 years in prison.
