Federal Appeals Court Upholds Same-Sex Marriage In Virginia

The ruling in favor of gay marriage in Virginia moves forward. A federal appeals court has denied a request to delay the ruling that struck down Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban. A panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond has denied the request by a circuit court clerk in Prince William County to stay the decision while it’s appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. That means without intervention from the Supreme Court, same-sex couples could begin marrying and have their out-of-state licenses recognized in Virginia by Wednesday, August 20th. Late last month, the court ruled that Virginia’s gay marriage ban approved by voters in 2006 is unconstitutional.
