Supervisors Abandon Western Bypass Support – Feds Say Put It On Hold

The Albemarle Supervisors have approved a resolution that abandons the county’s support for the proposed Western Bypass. Most of the board’s new majority is backing alternative approaches to ease congestion on 29 North. Ken Boyd cast the only no vote Wednesday night against that approach. Chairwoman Jane Dittmar backs the resolution, but she notes this action does not kill the project. A short time before Wednesday’s public hearing, the Obama administration sent a letter asking state officials to reevaluate the need for the bypass. That letter from the Federal Highway Administration delights many of the bypass crictics who showed up in droves for the public hearing.  They toted banners (pictured) that showed their sentiments.  Supporters of the bypass also spoke, but they were outnumbered by a five-to-one ratio.  The hearing attracted more than 140 speakers, and lasted 5-and-a-half hours.
