City Electoral Board Member Blows Whistle On Former Colleague

The chairwoman of the Charlottesville Electoral Board blew the whistle on a onetime colleague who had taxpayers paying for a cellphone long after her term ended. Joannie Schatzman (pictured left) has told the Daily Progress she was upset that Stephanie Commander (pictured right) rang up $2530 in charges and still had a city-owned phone earlier this year. City Manager Maurice Jones determined Commander was not authorized to have the phone three years after she left the board. Commander has turned in her phone and agreed to pay for its use. Up until 2011, Schatzman and Commander were Democratic members of the electoral board. They are shown at a 2006 meeting along with Republican member Rick Sincere (pictured center).
