Governor McDonnell has announced that plans to extend an Amtrak line have been finalized. The Amtrak train that goes from Lynchburg to Charlottesville to D.C. will now be extended to Roanoke. It will be the first time that Roanoke has passenger rail in more than 30 years. The announcement follows an agreement between the Department of Rail and Public Transportation and Norfolk Southern. The agreement includes track additions and realignments, signals and communication upgrades. The plan also includes an Amtrak facility and platform in downtown Roanoke. Money for the extension was included in the 2013 transportation package approved by the General Assembly.
