NEW YORK (Reuters) – Actor Sam Worthington, best known for his starring role in 2009 film “Avatar”, was arrested and charged with assaulting a photographer in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village district on Sunday, police said.

The photographer, Sheng Li, was also arrested and charged with assault, reckless endangerment and two counts of harassment, the force added.

The 37-year-old actor was given a desk appearance ticket, requiring him to appear in court later this month.

The Australian actor is accused of becoming involved in a bust-up outside a Greenwich Village bar Sunday afternoon, after a paparazzo allegedly kicked his model girlfriend Lara Bingle.

New York Police Department Lieutenant John Grimpel says, “The photographer kicked Lara and then Worthington punched him causing the photographer to have lacerations to his nose. He has been charged with assault. He punched the photographer.”

This isn’t the first time Worthington has had a run-in with the police – in 2012, the actor was arrested in Atlanta, Georgia for disorderly conduct following a bust-up with a bouncer outside a nightclub. The charge against Worthington was subsequently dropped.

Worthington, born in Surrey, England but raised in Australia, played the leading role of Jake Sully in “Avatar” and is slated for three more films in the series in coming years. His other major films include “Clash of the Titans” and “Terminator: Salvation.”
