By now, you are familiar with the saga of one Donald Sterling. He’s the owner of the L.A.Clippers who was recorded by his girlfriend, one V.Stiviano, that he doesn’t want her to post pictures of herself posing with Magic Johnson on Instagram or even bringing him to Clippers games. He said a lot of bad things about black people as well. In fact, Sterling has a history of discrimination against Mexicans too!
Show of hands: how many of you know a person like this? (Claven Bundy? Paula Deen?)
I’ve read a lot of comments pertaining to Donald Sterling’s free speech rights and have to respond by saying that Sterling has a right to say whatever he wants. It’s just that he’s the one who has to face the consequences. It’s not like he’s getting thrown in jail for saying those nasty things. And, get this, he asked V. Stiviano to record everything that he says so that he doesn’t forget anything.
On another note, my theory is that he felt upstaged by Magic Johnson. If you know anything about filthy rich, older men you know (to them) it’s all about power. If it had been another black man who wasn’t as famous as Magic Johnson (perhaps one of his players), this tape may not have been released.
It’s a shame that racism is so prevalent in this country, but I think it’s something that will eventually go away with each new generation. I have a 5 year old son who goes to preschool and it warms my heart that he’s in a class with children of other races and they all treat each other with kindness and respect.
